Andrews University Press in Berrien Springs, Michigan, has just released an impressive, 8½x11-inch, 332-page paperback book titled, Faith, Reason, and Earth History that deals with those three topics in a marvelous fashion. The author of this tome is Leonard Brand, a respected, published biologist with the Geoscience Research Institute at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. [The Forewordwhich provides a hearty recommendation not only of the content, but of the tone of the bookwas written by Kurt Wise, who holds the Ph.D. in paleontology from Harvard and studied under the renowned evolutionist, Stephen Jay Gould.]
In the books seventeen chapters, Dr. Brand presents clear, compelling discussions on topics as varied as the workings and limitations of the scientific method, the relationship between biblical faith and physical science, the geologic record, sociobiology, the arguments often offered in defense of macroevolution, etc.
But, in addition to these subjects, Brand also presents in-depth discussions of catastrophism as a model of Earth history, the case for what he calls informed intervention (i.e., design by a Creator), and biological change within known limits (i.e., microevolution). In his well-written foreword, Dr. Wise praised the books spirit of model-building, mutual respect, and accuracy, as well as its creation model and philosophy of science.
Indeed, it becomes obvious, from the very first sentence of the Preface, that the the goal of this book is to present the facts in a calm, non-strident tone. Brand accomplishes this goal most admirably. His discussions of the way science works, and the inherent limitations of the scientific method, should be required reading for anyone with even a cursory interest in the creation/evolution controversy. The sections on catastrophism and the inherent design in nature are among the most informative of the seventeen chapters and, in my estimation, among the most profitable for the reader who may be struggling to find answers to difficult questions or to build a defensible personal faith. The book is heavily illustrated with tables, graphs, drawings, and charts appearing on almost every page. And, as would be expected of a book of this quality, an extensive bibliography and an index are included at the end of the volume as well. [A word of caution: this is not a book for the casual reader. This book intends to challenge as much as it instructs. For the reader willing to devote some study of the concepts found within its pages, the end result will be both stimulating and rewarding. But pablum this is not.]
This book (from our 1999 catalog) is not cheap (it sells for $34.95), but it is worth the cost and would make a valuable addition on the creation/evolution controversy to a personal library. High school and college students (especially those with an interest in science) will find a wealth of useful and valuable information within its pages.
