“That Disclaimer”—An Explanation
by Bert Thompson, Ph.D. and Wayne Jackson, M.A.

When we began the work of Apologetics Press in 1979, we had several goals and objectives that were of importance to us. (1) We wanted to produce materials on apologetics and evidences that were scientifically accurate and biblically sound. (2) We wanted to publish items that were professional in appearance, and that therefore could compete in the broader marketplace. (3) We wanted our offerings to be as inexpensive as possible, so that anyone who needed them could afford them.

Throughout the eighteen-year history of our work, we have attempted to keep each of these goals in mind in regard to whatever we wrote, published, and distributed. We also have worked diligently to ensure that the items we carry in our annual catalog are of the highest standards possible.

Accordingly, a number of years ago we established a two-pronged policy. First, we determined that if we carried books that were written by those not associated with Apologetics Press, such books would have to meet stringent requirements. We did not want it to appear as if we followed some kind of “double standard” when it came to the items we offered through our catalog. We wanted our customers to know that if they purchased an item from us, they could do so in full confidence of its accuracy and usefulness.

Second, we wanted to alert readers to the fact that even though a book made a valuable contribution to the subject(s) it addressed, it might contain a few statements that should be approached with some degree of caution.

When the time arrives for us to produce our annual catalog, we screen potential offerings very carefully. We order review copies, and examine them to determine whether or not they represent worthy additions to our current listings. During the screening process, we examine the biblical content, as well as the scientific. Only when we are convinced that the item is acceptable in both areas is it then included in the next catalog printing.

If we decide to carry an item that presents good information, but that was authored by someone with whom we may have doctrinal disagreements, our policy is to include a disclaimer that states, in part: “Those associated with Apologetics Press do not endorse such teachings as organic or theistic evolution, an ancient Earth, premillennialism, ‘faith only’ salvation, present-day miracles, etc.”

By attaching this disclaimer, it is our intention to alert the customer that, so far as we are aware, the material in the book is beneficial overall, but could include ideas or concepts that are foreign to the teachings of the New Testament. Once made aware of this fact, the purchaser can assess the material in an appropriate manner.

We want each of our customers to know that we strive to make available only those materials that build faith in God’s Word and His creation. Since many of the materials we carry are for children, we believe such a policy is essential. However, we consider it equally as important for adults as well.

If you ever have any questions about the items included in our catalog, please do not hesitate to call our offices (1-800-234-8558).
